PTO Use it or Lose It, why professionals should take their vacation time
Those of us that get the benefit of Paid Time Off (PTO) often here the refrain use it or lose it around the workspace. For many of us the work can seem endless and arduous and the thought that we have to leave that project or that build in the heat of the effort can scare us. Especially if we are leaving because we’re going on PTO. Many can feel that it’s a betrayal to our colleagues or we’ll come back and it will be a disaster. Well, the truth is they will be fine with you gone and will be better served by a refreshed and rejuvenized you.
We need to take our PTO for the simple reason that an over dedicated professional that becomes burnt out is more of hindrance to their team then a well-rested one. We’ve heard stories in the past of people sitting on 200 or 400+ hours well into October that are hoarding the time to sell back or perceive themselves to be so critical that a day off is unthinkable. Again, policies change, your team will make it with you out for a long weekend or a week off at a time. If you develop a good backup and contingencies both you and your team can enjoy your PTO.
Consider maximizing your time off around paid holidays or for some scheduled company shutdowns. 4 day weekends and quick turn cruises all with the idea of using that PTO and not sacrificing that hard earned and negotiated time.
Your employer, and coworkers may like being around you and you them. Taking a day or a week, to enjoy yourself and relax and rediscover who you are without your career. Who your spouse is and why you are meant for each other. The joy of your children before they are adults and influence them with your experiences, love and time.
If taking a two-week trip thru the Panama Canal is too big of a leap. Start with 4 day weekend getaway to the next city over. You deserve and you are entitled to your PTO don't let the day end without booking that vacation.
